Medication Assisted Treatment

Home Medication Assisted Treatment

Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) is the use of FDA approved medication for the treatment of opiate/opioid addiction and substance abuse. This is a highly effective treatment practice that is used in the early stages of detoxification, and depending on the individual’s condition it may also be used throughout the rehabilitation process. At Outpatient Medical Detox we utilize the MAT program to help our patients safely and comfortably begin the first stages of treatment.

Using Medicated Assisted Treatment in Detox

Nearly all detoxification facilities use medicated assisted treatment during the beginning stages of the detoxification process. This allows the patient to get through the physical withdrawal of their addiction with minimal discomfort. When a patient is being treated using prescription medications they are under direct supervision of a medical professional. This ensures the doses are correct, withdrawal symptoms are minimal, and they are not developing a dependency to the medication. In most cases the patient is weaned off the medication before completing the program. Depending on the severity of the addiction the patient may return home with a low dose medication, requiring regular follow up appointments with a local medical professional.

Is MAT The Right Choice for Me?

Patients are never forced to take part in the MAT program. In fact, some may not be offered this program. People suffering from a severe heroin, opioid or alcohol problem are given the option to use medicated assisted treatment during the detox process. The withdrawal symptoms without medical aid can be uncomfortable and extremely painful at times. Using MAT you can find relief from withdrawal. MAT allows you to focus on healing yourself physically, mentally and emotionally from addiction.
